Book excerpt: Lalli's Window tells the story of Lalli, a ten-year old South-Asian-American girl who loses a leg in a car accident. The story begins soon after she returns home from the hospital. Confined to her home, she begins playing a game that she and her friend Sharon call "'Mysterious Houses." They look at the row of neighborhood houses through Lalli's bedroom window and weave entertaining stories around each home and its inhabitants. What begins as a fun game takes an unexpected and more mysterious turn as Lalli begins to encounter the people and lives that she had hitherto ignored as unimportant and boring. An unusual bond develops between her and an old Mennonite man across the street.
