The reader smiles at the recognition of the truth inherent within the image and ponders the irony of why so fine a state as peace should be regarded as dull, and so ugly a condition as war should be regarded as romantic. Boulding (1910-1993) was professor of economics at the University of Colorado and president of many scholarly associations including the American Economic Association, the Society for General Systems Research, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He authored numerous books including Towards a New Economics: Critical Essays on Ecology, Distribution, and Other Themes; Three Faces of Power; and The World as a Total System. Richard P. Beilock, a former student of Kenneth Boulding has been a graduate research assistant, Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, The Pennsylvania State University. He is professor in the Food and Resource Economics Department at the University of Florida.
