Book excerpt: Although the Southern Railway existed for only a relatively short period, from the Grouping in 1923 through to Nationalisation, during that 25-year period it created a strong identity both among the travelling public and among its staff. While much of the infrastructure and equipment used by the SR was inherited from the three constituent pre-Grouping companies and survived to Nationalisation, the SR was innovative in many ways, from its widespread adoption of third-rail electrification and its use of concrete through to its locomotive design (particularly under Bulleid). For the modeller obtaining photographic information is an essential part of gathering material to help construct the most realistic models. While there is a considerable amount of material published on locomotives, the quality of information on other topics - station design, train formation, platform furniture, rolling stock, freight facilities - tends to be much more variable. The OPC 'Miscellany' series was designed to circumvent this weakness, by producing a range of high quality, heavily illustrated books on individual railway companies, providing modellers and historians with an excellent photographic record of the individual railway company and its many and varied operations. This new addition to a popular series features the Southern Railway between 1923 and 1948. Drawing upon some 250 mono photographs, Kevin Robertson examines in depth the railway and those aspects of the Southern that helped to make it readily identifiable to enthusiasts and modellers.
